‘Batman vs Superman’ not moving, WB may not copy Marvel plan and ‘Sandman’ gets a writer
Fans was expecting to see Warner Bros emulate the model created by Marvel with crossovers and broad scope planning of films. One of the first and biggest hurdles appears to be the planned release of the Batman-Superman vehicle (nicknamed Batman vs Superman) which is slated to open opposite Captain America 3 in 2016.
“It doesn’t make a lot of sense for two huge superhero films to open on the same date but there is a lot of time between now and then,” says Warner’s president of domestic distribution, Dan Fellman to Bloomberg.
“However,” he continues, “at this time, we are not considering a change of date for Batman vs Superman.”
Meanwhile, screenwirter David S. Goyer addressess plans to interconnect the film, similar to the Marvel movieverse.
“I mean, it’s too early,” says Goyer to IGN on Tuesday. “I know that Warner Bros. would love to make their universe more cohesive. There have been a lot of general conversations about that, but it’s really, really early.”
“I’m not sure,” he continues. “Marvel has had enormous success, but I’m not sure that everybody should try to emulate them either. It’s just been vague conversations so far.”
“You have to admire what Marvel’s done. It’s really hard to create a brand, I mean, where people will follow your brand. Pixar’s done it, and now Marvel has done it. It’s really, really hard to do, because there’s not a lot of brand loyalty anymore. They’ve created a cohesive universe, so I really admire what they’ve done.”
Everybody meaning Fox with their X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises and Sony with Spider-Man – yes, fans may be wondering why WB wants to copy the template of Marvel.
Check out the full interview which offers few details, but confirms Goyer will work on the Sandman film.
“There’s a reason why it hasn’t been adapted for 15, 16 years,” he says of the popular Neil Gaiman comic book series. “It’s really dense and wonderful. Neil is a genius and cerebral. We’re just getting into that right now. We’ll see.”
Currently the Man of Steel sequel is set to open May 6, 2016.
