The City of Frostproof had their nativity scene set up in a field near a Florida highway and the Polk County Sheriff reports Thursday morning that the baby Jesus and a donkey have been stolen.

Sometime between Saturday and Monday the plastic baby Jesus doll and the 4×6 foot plywood donkey were stolen from the nativity scene.

The Frostproof Art League repainted the brightly colored wood animals and wise men a few years ago, and the city refurbished the display this year, the Mayor Kay Hutzelman said.

“It definitely has been a big part of our festival,” she said.

The theft happened after the annual holiday festival and parade, when a church brought in simulated snow for kids in this city of about 3,000 people.

“It’s more sad than anything else,” Hutzelman added.

“Hopefully the baby will show up,” Hutzelman said.

Anyone with information about the theft can call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-8477.
