Arrest of Santiago Aponte and Rodriguez Suarez for Providing Contraband in Prison

Special Agent in Charge Douglas A. Leff, of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) San Juan Field Office, announced the arrest of Catiria Marie Santiago Aponte and Christian Rodriguez Suarez at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC).

A criminal complaint issued on March 15, 2019, charged Santiago Aponte and Rodriguez Suarez with “Providing or Possessing Contraband in Prison, Possession with Intent to Distribute Controlled Substances and Conspiracy in violation of Title 18 United States Code, Section 1791 (1); and 21 United States Code, Sections 841 and 846.”

If convicted, Santiago Aponte and Rodriguez Suarez face a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 Years for each violation.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Marie Christine Amy and investigated by the FBI.

The public is reminded a criminal complaint contains only charges and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty. The U.S. government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
