Arkansas experiences first snowfall in May on record, which began in 1819

Since record-keeping began in 1819, Arkansas never had snow fall in May; that was until Friday. Reports are going viral across the Internet on Monday of the historic weather condition.

The previous latest snowfall ever recorded was on April 30, 1903 at Harrison, Gravette and Fayetteville. This was not measurable.

As much as 5 inches of snow was recorded near Decatur, Ark., Friday morning. The snow was heavy enough to break small limbs off fruit trees.

With the historic snow, it should not surprise many that the unseasonable cold also set May records in Arkansas.

The temperature Friday night bottomed out at 38 degrees in Little Rock, breaking the previous May record low of 39 degrees from May 1, 1903.

The previous latest measurable snowfall was 0.2 inches at Corning on April 24, 1910.

Below is a list of snowfall measurements from National Weather Service cooperative observer stations through specified times on Friday morning.

Fayetteville experiment station, 1.5 inches, 7 a.m.

Compton, 1 inch, 10 a.m.

Hindsville, 1 inch, 6:40 a.m.

Winslow, 1 inch, 7 a.m.

Kingston, 0.2 inch, 7 a.m.

Traces of snow were also recorded in Harrison, Jasper, Omaha, Parthenon and Ratcliff.
