‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ rumored to be a ‘romantic comedy’

While some fans are suffering from “superhero fatigue,” Marvel appears to be set for a change of pace: Ant-Man and the Wasp is rumored to be a romantic comedy.

According to Kinometro (via Flickering Myth), a Russian website attending a Kinorynok film presentation by Marvel, a promo video for Ant-Man and the Wasp was introduced with the statement that it was “the first rom-com from Marvel.”

Obviously Paul Rudd is perfect for the film and the love interest seeds were planted in the first film. The previous films have skirted the genre with meet-cutes between its heroes and love interest like Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, Robert Downey Jr. affections towards Pepper Potts in the Iron Man films, but little else of significance.

Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne will be center stage, donning the Wasp costume and likely proving to be more suited for battling evil than Rudd’s titular character.

Director Peyton Reed, returning after successfully pulling off the heist genre in Ant-Man, has a strong track record with rom-coms, with hits like the iconic 2000 teen rom-com that was Bring It On, as well as helming The Break-Up and Yes Man.

Marvel also announced the casting of Michelle Pfeiffer as Hank Pym’s wife Janet and the first Wasp, so it’s possible to see more of the “rom-com” elements of Ant-Man and the Wasp could refer to Hank and Janet’s tragic love story.

Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man) returns with Lilly (Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp) and Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), T.I. aka Tip Harris (Dave), David Dastmalchian (Kurt) and Michael Pena (Luis).

Randall Park is joining the MCU as SHIELD agent, Jimmy Woo, and Laurence Fishburne is playing a villain, Dr. Bill Foster. Hannah John-Kamen, she’s playing Ghost, while Walton Goggins is taking on the role of a weapons designer, Sonny Burch. Foster acquires the ability to grow into a giant-sized baddie named Goliath.

Judy Greer has been confirmed to play Maggie Lang again, but was most recently seen on the big screen as the ape Cornelia in the action sequel War for the Planet of the Apes.

Ant-Man and the Wasp will be arriving in theaters on July 6, 2018.
