‘Angry Birds 2’ may be dumb and silly, but gives kids a good message

After finding some box office success with Angry Birds, a sequel has arrived in theaters, Angry Bird 2.

In this sequel, the flightless angry birds and the green piggies must put their rivalry on hold and come together to save their islands from a rogue eagle named Zeta (Leslie Jones).

Leading the Angry Birds team is the hot-headed Red (Jason Sudeikis), who has pretty much become symbolic of the franchise.

Red, along with his winged buddies Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride) must work with their ace nemesis, the king pig Leonard Mudbeard (Bill Hader).

The story is rather simple and silly, offering up puns and physical gags for the kids and manages to never pretend to be anything otherwise. Among the new players are Chuck’s sister Silver (Rachel Bloom), a tech-savvy Brainiac and one of the best elements in the film.

While there are plenty of pop culture references and some gags for the adults, this is catering 98% to those youngest members of the audience.

As the film wraps up and offers those kids a message on teamwork, arrogance, not stealing the limelight and finding popularity in more than just public opinion seems overt but useful for kids growing up in a Twitter and social media driven culture of “Me First.”

The other members of the voice cast are Peter Dinklage, Maya Rudolph, Eugenio Derbez, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, Tiffany Haddish, Nicki Minaj, JoJo Siwa, Zach Woods, Dove Cameron, Brooklynn Prince, Beck Bennett, Faith Kidman-Urban, Sunday Kidman-Urban

It’s not possible to recommend the film for anyone other than those kids and parents of those same kids. Wanting or expecting some insightful or groundbreaking, you will be disappointed.

The Angry Bird 2 earns 5 stars (adjust up or down based on your personal expectations.)
