Amazon sets new headquarters for New York and Virginia after tax incentives and power push becomes clear

Amazon has ended its search for its new headquarters—but not without walking away with an immense trove of data about cities across the country and massive incentives.

The company said it will establish dual East Coast headquarters located in Long Island City, in the New York City borough of Queens, and the Crystal City neighborhood in Arlington just south of Washington, D.C. The HQ2 sweepstakes had pitted more than 200 cities, which was narrowed down to a shortlist of 20 in January, looking to woo Amazon with tax breaks and other amenities.

The company says it plans to invest $5 billion across both locations and create more than 50,000 jobs. Amazon specified in its request for proposals that the location be near a major airport, have the ability to attract top tech talent, and be in an area with a population of more than 1 million people.

Amazon has said employees who work in Seattle will have a chance to relocate. It will also hire teams and executives for the new locations.
