Alcohol Rehab Effective in Reducing Criminal Behavior

It goes without saying that, for those in the throes of alcohol addiction, seeking treatment through a professional rehabilitation center can come with many positive health benefits. However, alcohol rehab offers many indirect benefits beyond physical and mental health. For instance: According to a recent report from Psych Central, alcohol treatment can reduce the likelihood of the addict incurring criminal charges down the road.

“Offenders with alcohol problems who enter an alcohol treatment program as part of their sentence are far less likely to be charged or reconvicted during the 12 months following their treatment,” the article notes.

Mike Shea, founder of the southern California alcohol rehab centers, Chapters Capistrano, comments on the issue. “By seeking luxury rehab, alcohol abusers can invest in a healthy future—both physically and socially,” notes Shea.

Of course, alcohol treatment is not always a choice, but is sometimes court-mandated for alcohol offenders. This comes with advantages not just for the offender but for taxpayers in general; placing an individual in prison costs up to 37 times more than placing that same person in a local alcohol treatment program, Psych Central notes.

For those alcohol offenders who do not receive the treatment they need, however, the consequences can be dire. These individuals are twice as likely to be charged with another offense within a year’s time, and two and a half times as likely to be convicted again.

Shea says these findings are unsurprising. “Alcohol abuse is a disease, and should be treated as such,” he comments. “Rather than taking an entirely punitive approach to alcohol offenders, we need to rehabilitate them. We need to address the root cause of the problem—for their own good and for the good of our society.”

Alcohol rehab does exactly that—focusing not on punishing those who struggle with addiction, but rather on getting them well again.

Even I think sending a person to a rehab is a good option than convicting them. Most of the people who drink alcohol are not convinced that they have a problem and are always in denial. This rehabilitation centers give advise to people and help them to quit. So I think it is always a better option.
