Alabama murder suicide: Joey Hollis shoots and kills girlfriend, Kathryn Nichols, then himself

Authorities in Jackson County, Alabama are investigating a murder-suicide that happened Saturday night just before midnight on County Road 131 in Bryant. Joey Wayne Hollis reportedly shot and killed his girlfriend, killed Kathryn Rachels Nichols, before killing himself.

Deputies were called to a home on County Road 131 in the Bryant community late Saturday and discovered Nichols, 48, dead from a gunshot wound.

Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen said investigators believe 36-year-old Hollis fatally shot the woman and then himself. He added that investigators believe alcohol was involved.
Hollis is originally from Talladega, Harnen said, but had been living with his girlfriend in Bryant.

Further details haven’t been released.

Hollis had a long, long arrest record with a 2016 report noting that he had 19 arrests at that point, “being charged with felony domestic violence.”
