Aishwarya Rai Bachchan talks Delhi Gang Rape: ‘They should be punished immediately’
The December case of the 23-year-old New Delhi student who was assaulted by a group of men on a bus, beaten with an iron rod, stripped and eventually thrown off the bus after the torturous crime and then her eventual death has drawn the ire of many across India and the world.
Now the former Miss World and Bollywood starlet, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had a few things to say about the situation in India.
Rai Bachchan, who appeared at an event for the Zindagi Live Awards, said it was time for “immediate” action to protect women in India as as Indian lawmakers are due to take up new measures to significantly tighten laws on sexual assault against women, according to a AFP report Thursday.
The 39-year-old Bollywood star said, “A lot is being said but a lot more needs to be done about it. There should be definite laws for offenders. They should be punished immediately.”
“I don’t feel fear. Rather there is a lot of anger and I don’t hesitate to say this. Many of us are privileged to have a lot of assurance about our safety but most of the women in our country do not have that,” Rai Bachchan said.
