Addressing the Malta crisis, UN says ‘illegal immigrants’ should be called ‘irregular migrants’

While addressing immigration challenges in Malta, the United Nations is now calling for a change in the language used to discuss immigration. Using “irregular immigrants” (or irregular migrants) instead of “illegal immigrants” is preferred according to the office of the  UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Malta

The Telegraph writer explains “”Illegal immigration” apparently carries connotations of criminality, of someone doing something wrong. Like, for example, paying a people smuggler €700 to transport them a rickety boat that might sink with the loss of all on board. Whereas “irregular” is a more “neutral” term. Probably all the same to you and me.”

So, long gone is the term “illegal aliens” and while the US faces different challenges on immigration, critics says it won’t be long before the UN and progressives will be using similar terms describing those in the US illegally.

Also frowned upon is the word “clandestine”, which has a “strong negative connection, invoking a sense of criminality”. Instead, it recommends the phrase “irregular migrants”.

The Associated Press stopped using the words “illegal immigrant” in 2009.
