5 Things To Consider When Building the Home of Your Dreams

Building the home of your dreams can be an exciting adventure. There are so many possibilities to include or consider that the adventure can also turn into a nightmare. Rather than let the plans twist themselves into knots and cause you multiple headaches, use these five tips when building the home of your dreams.

Your Budget

The harsh reality is that sometimes your dreams and your budget are not compatible. Wanting to build a 5,000 sq. ft. home on a 2,500 sq. ft. financial arrangement is often a problem when you are trying to create your dream home. So, what do you do about it? Plan, plan, and plan. Discuss blueprints with your architect, but make sure the changes you are dreaming of are realistic on your building site. Also, know the limits of your budget, the size of home you are allowed (including garages), and what permits, fees, equipment costs including a crane rental and utility line costs must be included in the budget. If your dreams include a deck, pool, and outdoor cooking area, consider adding them a year or two after your home construction to save money in the accounts for kitchen and bathroom upgrades.

Your Lifestyle

Designing a home with your lifestyle in mind can save you many headaches in the future. If you are outdoors-people, you may want a mudroom. If your family gathers for a movie a couple of times a week, a large theater area may be perfect. If you have big gatherings once a month or more, an open floor plan may be desirable, with a large kitchen bar for conversation and appetizers. If you have small children, you can add a playroom with plans to expand the area into a library or tech-toy room as the children grow. If you have a home business, you may need storage for inventory and a large office. The way you live your life should determine the way you design your home.

Your Land

Know the type of land you are going to build on and all the problems associated with the area. If you are creating a multi-story home, plan for a Saskatoon crane rental. If there are trees on the land, large drop-offs, or marshy areas, know how the areas and the issues may affect your home and budget. For instance, having a multi-story home that incorporates low area that turns into a marsh for four months of the year may require considerable added drainage before even beginning home construction. The same could be true of land that contains areas of caliche, limestone, or clay. Know the truth about the composition of your soil before building your home.

Your Dreams

Creating a home while paying attention to your current needs is one of the biggest problems most people have when creating a plan. If you look five to eight years into the future and view your perception of your lifestyle at that point when you design your home’s limitation, you can end up much more satisfied with the end result. If you are older and plan to age-in-place, consider a stair-free design with wide hallways. If you are just growing a family, choose a design that can morph as the needs of your young children changes into technology advancements and educational study areas.

Your Timeline

Not all contractors are created equal. Some work on production tract homes, others construct semi-custom homes, and others build only unique structures. When searching for a contractor, knowing which type of builder you need before beginning interviews can save a great deal of time and money.

Knowing what you need in a home design can help you build a house that can grow with you. Before you talk with an architect, make a list.
