Teens announce 25 is now old thanks to the Mosquito
Can you hear that?
Nothing. That silence is the sound of our fleeting youth.
25 is the new old.
Well, that’s what I’m being told. The reason is simple: the mosquito.
The Mosquito, Mosquito alarm, the Beethoven ring if you are in France – this is ring tone at a high pitch that those of us older than 25 can no longer hear.
Sometimes called the “Teen Buzz”, this Mosquito ringtone, is played in public places, ceremonies etc…disruptive to fellow teens who hear it loud and clear.
Presbycusis2, or hearing loss, is a common degenerative process that effects all of us. Now teens have found a new way to circumnavigate around the strictest rules limiting communication, cell phone use, or texting.
Recently, my kids were all discussing “who” was setting off or receiving information using the Mosquito ring tone. Oblivious to the adults present, particularly the speaker, every single teen are “in tune” to this subculture of communication.
To prove the point further, my son initiated the ring tone in front of the dogs and they bugged out — no pun intended. Awareness is key as I believe bringing these topics to the forefront for parents, teachers, and all of us hearing deprived folks.
We just officially old now.
