2015 Truffle Pricing and the Factors that Influence Truffle Prices

Autumn has arrived and along with it also arrives the beginning of white truffle season. This long awaited season happens to be the busiest time of the year for truffle merchants and it is a time of year that is patiently waited for by truffle lovers worldwide. The biggest question for everyone in the truffle industry is: How much are truffles going to be this year?

To understand how the pricing works and why it changes every year and even more so, every week of the season, requires a brief analysis of the weather conditions of the previous seasons all the way up until the opening day of the season, and then weekly during the Alba’s White Truffle market. The truffle market is where the white truffle prices are historically determined.

According to weather.com, “The first half of 2015 was the warmest first six months on record for the globe, according to a pair independent analyses from government scientists released Monday.”

Weather is an obvious influence on the growth of truffles and it is more than just temperature, there are other conditions that influence the truffle industry.

The commissioners of the Alba White Truffle market have to say about the weather and how the analyzed to determine the price?

According to truffle judge Paolo Stacchini “Last winter was very short, the spring was very unbalanced with ups and downs of temperatures & longer than usual. The summer (which closely determines the white truffle season) was extremely dry with lots of heat. And finally fall has arrived and it’s been a slow start up”.

Mr. Stacchini states, “We are up higher of 50% in comparison of last year 2014, which was more generous from the very beginning”

Fidel Gamboa of Casatruffle.com has his own feelings about why the market is currently priced so high. “All of these conditions translate in low growth of truffles combined with the high demand of the white truffle season which results in high prices,” states Gamboa.

High demand + low availability = High price

Are the prices going to stay this way all season?

The answer is no.

In the past 4 days local temperature in Alba-Italy has dropped dramatically and it has brought some rains along with the temperature change which are favorable conditions for the growth of white truffles. Also, there are currently many people from around the world visiting the Alba’s White truffle market, which keeps the demand high.

Once Alba’s Truffle festival is over and hopefully few weeks of cold & rainy days stay, the growth of truffles will be up, demand low and that is what finally will bring prices back into the fair pricing zone.
